The role of metrology and the UK National Physical Laboratory in nanotechnology

Abstract

Measurement is ubiquitous and is essential in all industrial sectors. In this paper, we highlight the role of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) as the UK’s national measurement institute and discuss the need for metrology in nanotechnology. The research that NPL is undertaking in nanotechnology is described along with a discussion about the standardization of nanotechnologies.
